Covid-19: Unoccupied Premises

All businesses will currently be making major operational changes or, in some cases, shutdown of trade in light of the UK Government's response to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Any business that has closed their premises or switched to a 'working from home' environment should be mindful of their obligation to inform their property insurer when the building is set to remain unoccupied.

Usually, if a property is unoccupied for over 30 days, insurers should be made aware and cover will be restricted to Fire, Lightning, Aircraft and Explosion. However, given the extraordinary circumstances, we are pleased to learn that most of the major insurers are adopting a sensible approach – with the timescale being increased to either 60 or 90 days (therefore allowing full cover to continue).
